Overview of Pharaonic Village History
The Pharaonic Village is like an ancient version of Shakespeare in the park which was designed as a concept created by Dr. Hassan Ragab who also founded the entire village which acted as a papyrus plantation, and was responsible for rediscovering this paper plant which was extinct for thousands of years. He acquired papyrus roots from Ethiopia and Sudan on the island of Jacob where it was declared a papyrus plantation in 1966. Dr. Ragab desired to make a replica of ancient Egyptian society and in 1977 he became successful.
He started his plan by creating a number of canal networks dug in the grounds which oversees images of rural and ancient agriculture, many waterways were made, and 5000 planted trees of sycamores, weeping willows, and date palms. Many ancient Egyptian scenes found across the tombs and temples were brought to life in the greatest detail, to the point where some species of birds and animals were brought to life like the Meidum Goose which was believed to be extinct. The pharaonic village was opened for the first time in May 1984 and became a marvelous tourist attraction. A huge part of the profit goes to charitable work and in 1997 more than 2 million Egyptian pounds were donated.

The Pharaonic village is found in Cairo on the west bank of the Nile River, located on Jacob’s Island at 3 Al Bahr Al Aazam, Saqiyet Mekki, Giza Governorate. It covers an area of 490 thousand square feet in the heart of the Island of Ya’aqoub and is surrounded by 5000 tall trees that stand as a natural wall between the city and the village. It is just 6 miles away from south-central Cairo.
